Meet the youngest yoga instructor in America – 11-year-old Tabay Atkins. Tabay was only 6, when his mother Sahel Anvarinejad was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Chemotherapy caused her her hair to fall our and everyone including her 6-year-old son, was worried for her. But rather than simply depending on modern medicines and regular chemotherapy, Sahel tried something else to heal herself – yoga. By year end, she completed a 200-hour certification to become a yoga instructor and miraculously, she was cancer-free. She did all this because she loves her son dearly.
Tabay stayed by his mother’s side every single day when she practiced yoga and saw how it helped her beat cancer for good. That’s when he decided to become a yoga instructor and educate the world about the benefits of this exercise. Fast forward to 5 year later, Tabay is the youngest certified yoga instructor in America, or perhaps the youngest in the world.
“When he told me he was an instructor, I said, really?” said Kim Hanley, Tabay’s sixth-grade English teacher. Hanley, who has been practicing yoga for 16 years heard about Tabay’s classes and thought about giving it a try. “I had a hard time not crying the whole time,” she said. “He did so well. He said all the right things at all the right times. He taught me a few new tricks today. Very impressive. Sixteen years and I learned something new today.”
Tabay’s classes are donation based and every penny goes out to help people suffering from cancer. The young boy has set his heart and mind to make the world a better place and his parents could not be more proud.
