When we think of twins, our mind pictures two identical looking people but that’s not always the case. Meet Lucy and Maria Aylmer, who are twin sisters – one is black and the other is white.
The sisters were born in 1997 to a half Jamaican mother and a white father. Their mom Donna was shocked when she saw her babies. “It was such a shock for her because things like skin colour don’t show up on scans before birth,” said Lucy who has fair skin.
While Maria has dark curly hair and brown skin tone, Lucy is fair and has straight ginger hair. The twin sisters reveal that no one believes them when they tell people that they are twins.
“No one ever believes we are twins. Even when we dress alike, we still don’t look like sisters, let alone twins. Friends have even made us produce our birth certificates to prove it.”
“Most twins look like two peas in a pod – but we couldn’t look more different if we tried. We don’t look like we have the same parents, let alone having been born at the same time.”
The fact that they are twins and yet so different used to bother the girls when they were young, especially Lucy, but now the 20-year-olds have learned to embrace their unique looks and different looks.
