While watching sea lions at a pier in Steveston Fisherman’s Wharf in Richmond, BC, Canada, a little girl was attacked and dragged underwater by a hungry sea lion. The girl sat literally for a few seconds when the sea lion unexpectedly jumped and attacked her. Thankfully, the youngster’s grandfather quickly jumped in to rescue her.
The girl was bitten by the sea lion and was immediately treated with antibiotics. It is also likely that the girl may have contracted a rare disease called mycoplasma phocacerebrale which may lead to amputation or death. “If any member of our animal care team receives a bite from a sea or sea lion, they take a letter from our vet with them to the hospital, which explains that the infection is resistant to some antibiotics,” a staff from Vancouver Aquarium’s Deana Lancaster told ABC News. “The family saw the media reports and got in touch with us. She did get a superficial wound, and she’s going to get the right treatment.”
After the girl’s video went viral, the family was accused of being careless and held them responsible for the attack. Later, the girl’s father cleared it out by stating: “There was somebody beside them that was trying to feed them.”

The video was taken by an onlooker named Michael Fujiwara, who was just sitting and filming the sea lion eating bread crumbs when he suddenly attacked the little girl.
