Scout Penelope is a 3-year-old girl who loves her grandma, who she calls Nonnie. Last April, Nonnie was diagnosed with breast cancer which left Scout and her mother Ashley Larson completely broken. Nonnie was in pain and began intense chemotherapy in June. Soon she lost a lot of weight and her hair started to fall out. This made little Scout really sad and her mother hated seeing her like that. That’s when Ashley decided to educate her daughter about the strength of women in a fun way. She showed her pictures of strong and powerful women and told her a little bit about them. Ashley photographed Scout dressed as influential women such as Malala Yousafzai, Adele, Meryl Streep and Nonnie’s favorite – Ellen DeGeneres.

The project didn’t just help Scout but also helped Ashley cope while Nonnie battled cancer. “The entire project was such a godsend for Scout and myself. And showing my mom the end result- priceless,” Ashley wrote. “Every single minute I spent planning, styling, shooting, and editing was 100% worth it.”
#2 Carrie Fisher and Scout
It took about a year for Ashley to photograph Scout dressed as these women and get the portraits ready. Little Scout continues to pose as other strong women and is on her way to emulate her favorite Disney princesses too.
#3 Frida and Scout
“I truly want Scout to be able to look back at this and know that women are just as strong as any man. And to be quite honest, my fingers are crossed that by the time she’s old enough to understand the strength she’s portraying- women won’t be seen as delicate and dainty anymore, anyway. And I hope that when Scout looks back on this, she is proud of who she is and who she will become.”
#4 Emma Watson and Scout
As for Nonnie, she kicked cancer’s ass! So, ofcourse, Scout had to dress as her Nonnie too.
